Fear crumble to Columbia
Cape Fear: 12
Columbia: 19
After an excellent start to the spring season last week Cape Fear ran on to the pitch with high expectations of going top of the league with 2 wins out of 2. Unfortunately for Fear the cold and wet weather was not what they had been hoping for, and it soon became a tight battle between both sets of forwards.
Fear started the game well with a short period of fluid play, but this was short lived as the Columbia forwards took control. Fear’s defense was finally breached 15 minutes in to the game as Columbia went crashing over the line through several half tackles. Fear seemed to regroup behind the posts and came out firing on all cylinders; through some good attacking play Fear equalized the score with a well worked backs move Mclean adding the 2 extras. Columbia then entered another sustained period of pressure on the home team’s try line when on the stroke of half time Columbia sneaked past the Fear defense for a second time. Half time score Fear 7 Columbia 12.
The second half was a one sided affair for the most part with Fear rarely visiting their opponents half. Columbia squandered 2 or 3 chances early on, Fear being lucky not to concede before they did when the Columbia centre intercepted a miss pass and raced to the try line. It was not until the very last minute when Fear attacked wide using their substitute full back Keith Markfield to penetrate the line and right wing Ryan Glass to score a consolation try in the corner, it was just to little too late.
Overall it was a poor performance by Fear but they will take a lot from the game and work on it in preparation for next week. Fear travel to Greenville, South Carolina next Saturday where a win is a necessity to stay in contention for the league title.
