Cape Fear Opens spring season with Big Win over Southern Pines

Muddy conditions suited Fear’s new game plan perfectly

On what turned into a perfect rugby weather day Cape Fear Rugby Club opened up the Spring Matrix season with a Huge win over conference foe Southern pines 52-8.  The scoring was early and often as Fear used a combination of tough running forward play to open up the field for the backs to touch down 8 tries on the day including 3 from Pierre Naude and 2 from new comer Phillip.

Solid defense and forwards play from Cullen Lea, Aaron Reynolds and Mike “Dr Thunder” Maurer set the tone early in the match and a stable scrum throughout allowed Fear to play the match on their terms.  Coach Jim Wiseman felt compelled to take most of the credit for the win, based on his pregame speech of “Just pick and go, it’s works”.

Fear currently sits at the top of the conference standings and travels to Columbia this coming weekend to attempt to avenge their one loss from the Fall season and put themselves in the best position possible heading into the playoffs.

Lejeune Vs Fear and Weekly Notes

Gentleman of Cape Fear; the Crusade has commenced.

Arriving at training last night was mesmerizing at the least; the turn out we had reflected the influx we usually experience in the summer for the sevens season.  The level of dedication, individuals stepping up and providing leadership, and passion. this Time last year we had 6-8 due paying members, played touch with the 7 guys we had at training, and ran onto the pitch with 15 individuals. Now- we are on the brink of our 30th due paying member, consistantly getting 17+ turning up to training, and we look like a team.

We have turned this club around. Well done to everyone. The catalyst for this will be the Greenville match in 2 weeks.

LEJEUNE V FEAR- saturday the 11th. This is a practice match, and the official retirement of the old kit.kickoff at 1pm at Flytrap, be there at 11.30 suited up ready to go. After function will be at the 5 Star Tavern (polos for the after function, blue warm ups for pre game warm up).

VIDEO SESSION-Next Saturday (25th of Jan) forwards are going to run a line out/scrum session starting 11am. Directly after this, we are running a video session at the 5 Star Tavern; purpose of this is to study play from the Lejeune game and other international rugby games. this is a mandatory event for active members.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING- We will continue to run this as a club session. Dress is blue warm up tops, meeting location is the Dram Tree park parking lot ( off Surrey and Castle st downtown- next to the Andrew Jackson Bridge) @ 6pm every Monday; this is a mandatory session, get in contact with one of the captains if you cant make it.
